New for 2026, we have devised a new type of Running Assessment
We see a lot of runners at Barbican Physio, and many are having problems because they follow strict, generic guidelines from apps and internet influencers whose advice doesn’t suit them. Increasingly we see injuries sustained by increasing load too quickly, whether this is too much running or running too hard. The weakest link becomes symptomatic and rehabilitation can take a long time. When confronted with these injuries, we spend a lot of time assessing programmes and load progressions in addition to evaluating the nature of their complaint and helping them to return to the exercise they love.
The running assessment aims to assess the individual’s running capacity holistically, looking at where these weaker links may be. Maybe they’re from a long forgotten injury or just a change in life circumstances causing a loss of fitness and an increase in weight, for example. We aim to find the pinch points, and devise a plan of action to reduce the risk of injury as you increase your running load.
The running assessment will take an hour and comprise the taking of a thorough history, a physical examination and the use of our new treadmill and dynamometry. Our treadmill measures cadence, flight time, stride length and left vs right balance in real time and has a variety of different surfaces and inclines to see if running form alters in different circumstances. Our new VALD force frame adds robust dynamometry to assess muscle strength and our meloq force plates a more detailed evaluation of balance and distribution of load.
At the end of the hour long assessment, you will leave with a greater understanding of how your body absorbs and propels the load of running, and be armed with tips on redistributing that load, strengthening those areas vulnerable to injury and achieving a training programme tailored to you and the time you have available.
